Professional
sailing and boat handling tuition
Before
you can become a useful crew member or start skippering a boat you need
to learn a range of skills. In other words, you need to learn how to
sail and handle a boat properly. The best way to do this is to acquire
the Royal Yachting Association Competent Crew and Day Skipper Practical
certificates.
We
operate five-day Competent Crew and Day Skipper Practical courses from
our base at Mayflower Marina, Plymouth between April and October. The
boat used is our extremely safe and comfortable Moody 38 Stream
(please click HERE to find out more about
her features). The size and layout of Stream means that there
are three private cabins, two of which are en suite.
Our sailing and
boat handling tuition courses are conducted by Michael Selway, a qualified
Yachtmaster Offshore® and RYA Cruising Instructor with over 25 years’
sailing experience. You will be in the safe hands of an experienced
and personable professional. We operate our Competent Crew and Day Skipper
courses in partnership with Golden Black Sailing, an RYA Training Centre.
Competent
Crew
This practical course introduces the complete beginner to sail cruising
and teaches personal safety, seamanship, helmsmanship and living on
board to the level required to be a useful member of any yacht’s
crew.
Day
Skipper Practical
This course teaches pilotage, seamanship and boat handling to the standard
required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in familiar
tidal waters. This course is usually taken after the student has completed
the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course. Holders of the Day Skipper Practical
certificate are entitled to apply for the International Certificate
of Competence (ICC) that is now demanded of yacht crew visiting many
European countries.
Each
course has up to four persons only and so our student/instructor ratio
ensures excellent personal attention throughout. Courses include these
features:
| • |
Each
one lasts five days and usually starts late afternoon on a Sunday
and runs through to late afternoon on a Friday, but other times
may be available by arrangement |
| • |
The RYA book of notes on either the Competent Crew and Day Skipper
Practical course is sent in advance for preparation, together with
the RYA course syllabus and personal log book |
| • |
A
minimum of 100 sea miles are covered during the five days, together
with four hours of night watchkeeping |
| •
|
Breakfast
and lunch for five days, with dinner provided on board on four of
the five evenings |
| • |
All
boat mooring costs, fuel and gas |
The
price per person for each course during April and October is £445.00,
and during May to September is £495.00. Please click HERE
